A New York City cop has been framed for the murder of his boss, and now he's on the run from both the police and from the mobsters who he was dealing with as an undercover DEA agent. Everyone's against him and he has no friends in a town where breathing can get you killed; Max is on the run.
3 years prior, Max got off work and headed home to meet his family. Upon opening the door, he saw his family murdered. The culprits were none other than a bunch of junkies that were high on a new drug called Valkyr. Max swore to get revenge, and at that point, joined up with the DEA to balance his spirit through the use of a 9mm pistol.
Now that Max was in the DEA, he went undercover to be seen in the crime world as a fellow criminal. His cover was blown after the murder of his boss, and now he's wanted on both sides of the line we call "the law". You play this character in Max Payne, but it's more like a movie than a real life story, and that's just what the people at Remedy wanted.
